Research Interest:
Dr. Ren is the Dean of the College of Life Sciences and is an insect taxonomist and insect collection specialist.

His research goals are to establish a leading program in the Coeloptera beetle morphology, biology, systematics, ecology, and biogeography. As the founder of the Chinese Heteromera and Cucujioidea beetle research in systematics, Dr. Ren’s research focuses on families such as Tenebrionidae, Allleculidae, Lagriidae, Meloidae, Trogidae, Erotylidae, and Endomychidae using both morphological and molecular data. In addition, his research is also related to other orders, such as Orthoptera, Mentatea, and Diptera, both in systematics and plant pest control.

Courses that Dr. Ren has taught include General Entomology, Economic Entomology, Principles of Systematic Zoology, and Introduction to Evolutionary Biology. Dr. Ren is also the author of two college textbooks, Insect Taxonomy and Scientific Research Methodology. So far, one postdoctoral fellow, 4 Ph.D. students, and nearly 30 M.S. students have finished their study under his advisory. As the PI of approximately 30 research projects, Dr. Ren has successfully acquired 7 funds from the China National Natural Science Foundation, 4 grants from the China Ministry of Technology, 1 grant from the Ministry of Education, and 5 grants from Hebei Province. China National Scientific Book Publication Fund has supported one of his 31 published books. Out of a total of 223 peer-reviewed publications, 11 have appeared in SCI cited journals. Due to his hard work, Dr. Ren has discovered 6 new insect genera and 224 new species. Of the insects studied, 2 tribes, 18 genera, and 94 species have been described by Dr. Ren for the first time from China. In addition to discoveries and descriptions of new species, Dr. Ren has also revised previously described species and found lots of new synonyms. Based on his work, Dr. Ren established the new "Ningxia-inner Mongolia" insect geographical distribution theory.

In his book The Darkling Beetles from Deserts and Semideserts of China (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae), the first book on desert insects in China, Dr. Ren discovered that (1) the presence of "subelytra" is one of the most important drought-resistance characteristics of the desert insects; (2) the geographical distribution of desert insects, particularly the Tenebrionidae beetles, shows the "Beetle-Plant Reverse Distribution Law", that is, although the plant species are becoming richer from western to eastern China, the beetle species are diminishing; and (3) the Tenebrionidae species diversity is largely dependent on its origin and evolution, rather than plant species diversity.

Dr. Ren was the leading investigator in insect field collection trips to Motou, Tibet. He also joined more than 80 collection trips to the China National Natural Reserves and the Provincial Natural Reserves in the past ten years and has collected more than 620,000 insect specimens for the Hebei University Natural History Museum. Dr. Ren was invited by 15 Chinese provinces to write books on the insect fauna and catalog, in corporation with entomologists from Hungary, Japan, and Russia on the Holarctic and Nearctic insect studies, and was invited to Japan and Taiwan for presentations and conducting research.

In addition to his professional career, Dr. Ren also has a wide variety of hobbies such as:
(1) Insect specimen collections. He has traveled to all 30 provinces and regions of China, including Taiwan and the Xisha Islands, and experienced different kinds of geographical categories, such as the Qinhai-Tibet Plateau, the Gobi desert, rainforests, prairies, islands, and crop storage buildings.
(2) Science and technology. Dr. Ren has advised undergraduate students in science and technology innovation and was awarded 1st and 2nd place in the “Challenging Cup” among teams from universities all over China along with the Special Award and 1st and 2nd place among the Hebei Province University teams.
(3) Public scientific interesting. Dr. Ren is the author of “Biography of Distinguished Biological Scientists around the World” (Hebei University Publishing House, 2000) and more than 10 other biology related publications that serve the general public.
(4) Biological illustration and photography. He has provided more than 2000 illustrations and photographs for both scientific books and training textbooks, such as Fruit Tree Cultivation, Garden Disease and Pest Control, and Science Universal News. Dr. Ren is also good at the flute and Hu-lu-si flute, which is now only played by few people in the Yunnan Province.
