Research Interest:
|
My research is related to taxonomy, systematics, ecology, biology, and behavior of spiders. I am currently working on:
(1) Systematics, ecology, and biogeography of spiders (Araneae): The spider families I am interested in are Gnaphosidae, Clubionidae, Lioeranidae, Pholcidae, Mimetidae, Miturgidae, and Corinnidae. My institute has more then 100,000 specimens, including more than 300 types. My collection trips are focused on the Biodiversity Hot Spots in China, such as Xinjiang, Tibet, and Yunnan etc. We are planning more collection trips to southwest and northwest China, Hainan Island and Xisha islands (Paracel Islands) in southern China from 2007 to 2009. From those trips and the future study on those collections, we hope to reveal the distributional characteristics and historical biogeography of the species of spider order Araneae.
(2) Habitat fragmentation and its influence to the spider community composition and structure: Currently I am focusing on the study of spider species from Taihang Mountains that stretching down the eastern edge of the Loess Plateau in Henan, Shanxi and Hebei provinces. My research group is exploring the spider community structure, composition, and its distributional characteristics. Our purpose is to improve the functionality of spiders as a natural enemy in pest control and to maintain ecological balance. In addition, we are studying the habitat fragmentation and its relationship with spider community structure and species diversity. The result of our study will provide a scientific evaluation to the status of habitat fragmentation.
