Research Interest:
The focus of my research efforts is plant systematics, biodiversity, and soil ecology, particularly the diversity of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) in the adversity of soil from arid and semi-arid areas and the symbiotic mechanism between AM fungi and their host plants.

Further in detail, my research concerns:

(1) Systematics of the plant families Compositae and Leguminosae, and the study on the sustainable utilization of natural resources. I am currently focusing on the diversity, systematics, evolution, and sustainable use of the species of Compositae genera Seriphidium and Artemisia and Leguminosae genus Hedysarum based on a sample approximately 60,000 specimens in our collection. The genus Seriphidium was separated from the genus Artemisia in 1961 but its generic status and phylogenetic relationships with related species are still problematic. While Seriphidium have been thoroughly studied in other parts of the world, nobody has done any work on them in China in past 20 years. My research on Seriphidium includes plant conservation biology and genetic diversity, and I have recently extended my studies to also include species diversity and sustainable utilization of the northern China genus Artemisia.

(2) Biology and utilization of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi. My research is related to the diversity and ecology of AM fungi in desert cloning plants, such as Artemisia ordosica, Hedysarum leave, and Psammochloa villosa, by focusing on the characteristics of their symbiotic relationships. I also studied the distributional patterns of AM fungi and explored how the growth of clonal plant species affects the activities and distribution of AM fungi. I am the first in China who developed the dry-resistant AM fungi, expanded the AM fungi diversity research on priority plant species in ecologically fragile areas in northern China, and studied its role in global climate change. In the area of mycorrhizal symbionts induced Chinese traditional medicine resources, I am studying the collection, preservation and cultivation of AM fungi that are related to various plant species, such as Huang-Qi(Astragalus), Huang Qin(Scutellaria baicalensis), Gan Cao(Liquorice Root), Bai Zhi(Angelica dahurica), Bai Shu(Rhizoma atractylodis macrocephalae), Dan Shen Root (Radix Salviae Miltiorrhizae), and Cai Hu(Bupleurum chinense). My studies on mechanisms of mycorrhizal symbionts, growth of medicinal herbs, accumulation of herb active ingredients, and herb metabolism have been applied to the finding of the new herb varieties and improving the standard cultivation technique.
