Established in 1951, the College of Life Sciences currently has 73 faculty members, including 2 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (Entomologist Xiangchu Yin and Arachnologist Daxiang Song), 4 professors who are receiving the State Special Allowance from China State Council (Xiangchu Yin, Daxiang Song, Guodong Ren, and Mingsheng Zhu), and 38 professors and associate professors. Professor Guodong Ren was awarded the Young Scholar with Outstanding Contributions in China and was selected as the China National Distinguished Scientists. The college now has 8 Ph.D. advisors and more than 30 M.S. advisors. We also invited more than 30 worldwide famous biologists to serve as adjunct professors. Forty-four of our faculty members have a Ph.D. degree.

MAJORS

The College offers 5 undergraduate programs in Biology, Biotechnology, Bioinformatics, Bioengineering, and Marine Biology, 12 M.S. programs in Biology, 1 M.S. program in Medicine (Microbiology and Biochemical Medicine), and 2 M.S. programs in Agriculture (IPM and Aquatic Farming). In addition, we also offer a Ph.D. program in Zoology and a postdoctoral program in Biology. The College of Life Sciences now has 2 Distinguished Programs in Zoology and Bioengineering established by Hebei Province, 3 Hebei Province Distinguished Labs and Research Centers (Hebei Bioengineering Technology Research Center, Hebei Invertebrate Zoology Research Lab in Systematics and Applied Biology, and Hebei Microbiology Diversity and Application Lab), and 4 research institutes established by Hebei University (Bioengineering, Aquatic Biology, Zoology, and Microbiology). The College of Life Sciences at Hebei University is one of the most important researches and teaching institute supported by Hebei Province, with 800 undergraduate and 300 graduate students enrolled at this moment.

RESEARCH FACILITY

The college owns 7000 square meters lab space and nearly RMB30,000,000 investment in research equipment and devices, such as Protein Microarray Spotting System, TEM, Protein Analyzer, Gene Gun, and Computer Controlled Fermentation Equipment, etc. Our Natural History Museum has a collection of more than 760,000 specimens, including more than 1000 type specimens in insect, spiders, and other animals.

RESEARCH INTERESTS

1. Invertebrate Zoology systematics and evolutionary biology: Pancrustacea, Hexapoda, Arachnida (Daxiang Dong and Mingsheng Zhu), Orthoptera (Xiangchu Yin and Fuming Shi), Coeloptera (Guodong Ren), and land snails (Min Wu).

2. Microbial systematics and economic application: Actinobacteria and Myxobacteria (Liping Zhang and Zhitang Lu), fungi that used in the food and pharmaceutical industries (Qian Wang), and microbial drug screening.

3. Plant ecology and Biochemistry: Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) (Xueli He), plant structural chemistry (Duqiang Luo), and plant pathology (Jizhi Jiang).

4. Animal cell and developmental biology and application: Shrimp, crab cell development (Xianjiang Kang), cell engineering (Sun Xie), and applied molecular technology (Fengsun Liu).

5. Biochemical products: Earthworm fibrinolytic enzyme research (Xiaoyu Zhao and Jinxia Wu).

6. Protein microarray and proteomics technology: Early diagnosis of human disease, particularly focus on cancer (Li Zhong).

RESEARCH PROJECTS & PUBLICATIONS

Our college have been supported by 12 research funds from China National 8th, 9th, 10th, and 11th Five-year Development Projects, more than 30 funds from China National Natural Science Foundation, more than 10 funds from China Ministry of Technology, and more than 40 funds from China Ministry of Education and Hebei Province. Our faculty members have received more than 22 Hebei Province Advanced Technology Research awards and Natural Science Research awards, 3 China National Excellent Scientific Book awards, and have been granted 3 China patents. A total of more than 1,000 research papers have been published in recent ten years, and 80 of them have been recorded by SCI, EI, and ISTP, in addition to more than 70 scientific books and college textbooks.

DISTINGUISHED RESEARCH RESULTS

"A Synonymic Catalogue of Grasshoppers and Their Allies of the World" (in English, 1,226 pages, was awarded the 1st place in the China National Excellent Scientific Book awards), "The Spiders of China" (in English, 640 pages, was awarded the 3rd place in the China National Excellent Scientific Book awards), "Fauna Sinica" (has published 12 volumes by our faculty), and "Fauna Hebei Province" (has published 5 volumes by our faculty).

Xiangchu Yin: Academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the president of the "Fauna Sinica" evaluation committee.

Daxiang Song: Academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the board member of the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature, the board member of International Society of Zoological Sciences, the vice president of the Chinese Zoological Society, and the vice president of the "Fauna Sinica" editorial committee.

Twelve of our other faculty members serve as the president of China national level scientific societies.
