Welcome Message
First I extend the most sincere gratitude and the heartedly compliments on behalf of College of Life Sciences, SNNU, to colleagues, scholars, and friends from all over the world for your support for our college.
Shaanxi Normal University (SNU) is one of the six normal universities directly affiliated with the State Educational Ministry. The University has a long history as it just celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2004. The College of Life Sciences, with a history of more than 53 years, is conveniently located next to the world-famous scenic resort of the Great Wild Goose Pagoda (Dàyàn Tǎ). The college, just like its famous historical and cultural city Xi-An, is now opening her arms to the world and turning herself into a multi-cultural, open-minded, well-known, modernized, and first class college in the field of life sciences!
Life Science is a leading science and has a priority to develop because it will soon play a very important role in solving the crises of population, environment, energy, and food present in China. It is also a discipline that international universities are starting to pay more attention to and competing to develop. Life Science is one of the disciplines our university focuses on developing. For the past few years, the SNU has been giving priorities to our college in both laboratory construction and faculty recruitment. The college has invested more than 10 million Chinese Yuan in lab construction and has recruited nearly 10 new faculty members nationally and internationally. As a result of more advanced facilities in scientific research, our accomplishments in training students have improved significantly in the past few years. The college has made greater progress in every aspect.
Discipline development has obtained a breakthrough in recent years. The college successfully established one postdoctoral training center in biology, two doctoral programs, and 5 master programs in 2003.
Officinal Plant Resource and Natural Medicament Chemistry Key Laboratory of Education Ministry has been granted to build. The GAP Engineering and Technique Research Center of Shaanxi Province is affiliated with our college as well. All these efforts will be able to make sure that our college will make great contributions towards training more highly accomplished students, getting high-level scientific research achievements, and promoting local economic development.
The College of Life Sciences has successfully trained lots of students in different fields. Among them, more than 10 have been named as Dean of the College of Life Sciences in well-known universities in China, many have worked as life science research scientists in universities nationally or internationally, and others have become teachers in high schools or other special classes. The college has made theory breakthroughs in many research fields, such as insect systematics, insect molecular phylogeny, behavioral physiology, animal ecology, prevention and cure of tumors, endangered plant species conservation, plant systematics, physiology of plant fastness, and plant cell engineering. The college has also promoted the development of local economy in research fields such as pest management and modernization of Chinese traditional medicine.
Without the support and hard work of our faculty and staff, the college would not have made such great progress. The people of the College will persist in discipline development, enhancing the level of teaching and scientific research, getting additional high-level achievements, and training more innovative. The college will be established as the base for research and training for high-level researchers in life sciences.
Because our college is in western China and the economy is in a developing stage, the development of our college is restricted in some degree. As a result, we sincerely hope to listen to your opinion and look forward to your help. We would like to take this opportunity to invite you to collaborate with our faculty and visit our college. We also hope you can become a member of our faculty and make great contributions towards Western Development, sustainable development of ecology, society and economy. We believe we can develop our enterprise successfully together.
Prof. Zhe-Zhi Wang
Dean of the College of Life Sciences
